Choose a size for the whole inscription

A 150 × 50 mm bench plaque suits a name, dates and a short dedication. A5 (210 × 148 mm) gives a longer tribute more room. A4 (297 × 210 mm) suits a shared garden dedication or a message with several names. Measure the available mounting surface before choosing.

Choose the finish by setting

Brass gives a warm contrast against timber and stone. Aged brass is hand-patinated and sealed for a softer appearance. Stainless steel has a silver finish that suits a simple, contemporary garden. Brushed and polished brass naturally change over time; choose with that changing appearance in mind.

Give every line enough space

Make the name or dedication the clearest part of the layout, then place dates and the personal message beneath it. Keep lettering clear of the border and fixing holes. View the proof at the intended plaque size: if it feels crowded, shorten the message or choose a larger plaque.

A place for the plaque

Plan the mounting
before the wording.

The setting decides how much room you have and how close someone can get to read it.

On a bench, wall or timber support

Measure the flat fixing area, including any narrow bench slats. Keep holes away from joints and edges. Standard fixings are included; tell us what you are mounting to so the fixing arrangement can be checked. A wall or a separate timber support can give a tree dedication a clear place without fastening the plaque to the living tree.

At a shared garden or public bench

Ask whoever manages the site for their permitted dimensions and mounting position before designing. Put the plaque where planting will not cover the inscription, and leave access for cleaning. If you have an existing bracket or support, send its dimensions with your enquiry.

Looking after the finish

Care depends on the selected finish. Check the care instructions before using polish or abrasive cleaners, especially on a sealed, aged or coated surface. Ask us about the intended location before ordering if it is particularly exposed or near the sea.

Always happiest in the garden

A longer family tribute

Start with A5

In loving memory of
David Thompson
1951–2023
A much-loved husband, dad and grandad.
We remember you here,
in the garden you loved.

A community tree dedication

Consider A5 or A4

This oak was planted
to celebrate fifty years

With thanks to everyone

Your questions, answered.

Have something else in mind?

Talk to us ↗
Can garden plaques be used outside?

Yes. Choose brass or stainless steel with suitable fixings. The proof shows the layout, material and fixings before payment.

What size is best for a garden plaque?

A5 is a good starting point for names, dates and a short message. Bench plaque sizes work better for very short wording.

Can I see my plaque before I pay?

Yes. Create your layout in the online designer, with no account or payment needed. Check names, dates, line breaks and fixing positions, then download your proof PDF if you need time to decide. The PDF includes a link to return to your design. The proof is for approving wording and layout; screen colours and texture previews are illustrative.

What is included in the price?

Standard plaque prices include engraving, standard fixings and UK delivery. Wood backing, special finishes and other extras are priced in the designer before checkout.

How long will my plaque take?

Standard production is estimated at 5 working days from proof approval and payment. Standard aged-brass plaques are estimated at 7 working days; A4/A5 with wood backing at 10; custom sizes and other wood-backed plaques at 15. Your selected options determine the estimate shown before checkout. These are production estimates, with delivery time additional. Contact us before ordering for a fixed event date.

Which material should I choose for outdoors?

Brass gives a warm, traditional appearance and develops character over time. Stainless steel has a clean silver finish. Both can be used outdoors with suitable fixings. Choose the finish you prefer and check the fixing options in your proof.
